The playtest
Playtest Agreement
Draft — not legal advice, and not yet reviewed by a lawyer.
This is the one page you agree to when you join the Astraya playtest. It covers the rules, your data and how the game uses AI. I have kept it short and plain. If anything is unclear, write to me at hello@astrayagame.com.
The short version
- Astraya is unfinished. Things will break, and telling me when they do is the point.
- You must be 18 or older. Your access is just for you: please don’t share it.
- Play fair: don’t attack or scrape the servers, don’t use cheating tools, and be kind in versus.
- Streams, clips and screenshots are welcome. Just say it is an early playtest build.
- Founding Testers may receive a free Steam key, a thank-you in the game’s credits, or both. That is a “may”, not a promise.
- AI writes VESPER’s words and voice as you play. Your voice leaves your computer only between your taps, and what you ask her may be kept to improve her. Ask me any time for a copy or deletion.
The short version is a guide. The full text below is the agreement.
Contents14 sections
An unfinished build
#Astraya is a game in development, made by one person. The playtest build is early and unfinished.
- Expect bugs, crashes, slow loading and odd balance.
- Moves, powers, numbers and whole features may change or disappear between builds. Values may change during the playtest.
- Your progress and the moves you forge may be reset.
- The game may be down at times, sometimes without warning.
The build is offered as it is, for testing. I can’t promise it will work on your computer, that it will always be available, or that anything you make in it will be kept.
Telling me what breaks, what confuses you and what feels wrong is the most useful thing you can do.
Who can join
#You must be 18 or older to join the waitlist and to play.
Why an age limit: the playtest collects your email and, if you choose to speak, your voice. Data-protection law in India, where most testers are, treats every minor as a child, and a small playtest has no way to check a parent’s consent.
One person per invite. Your access is for you alone, not for a family, a team or a stream audience. Please use your own email address and answer the signup questions honestly.
To play you need a PC or laptop (Windows, Mac or Linux) with a keyboard or a controller. Phones can read this site but cannot play.
How access works
#I let people in a few at a time, in small batches picked by hand from the waitlist, to get a mix of machines and players. Being on the list does not guarantee a place.
When your batch opens, you get an email with your own way in: a personal link, or a code sent to your email address each time you sign in. Keep it to yourself.
Each tester is planned to have a daily allowance for VESPER, because every forge costs real money. When it runs out, the fight goes on: she keeps helping from what she already knows until the next day.
Online versus comes later, for pairs I invite.
Access can be revoked. I may pause or remove access if this agreement is broken, if access is shared, when a round of testing ends, or if the playtest has to stop. I will try to tell you why.
Playing fair
#Astraya is small, and everyone in the playtest shares its servers. Please don’t:
- attack, overload or load-test the game’s servers, or try to get around its limits;
- scrape the game or this website, or reverse-engineer the servers and the services behind them;
- share, sell or give away your invite, link or sign-in code;
- use cheating tools, bots, or anything that changes the game or its network traffic;
- try to make VESPER say something hateful, sexual or cruel (strange requests are welcome, because that is testing; abuse is not);
- harass, threaten or insult other players in versus, or anywhere around the game.
Be kind in versus. Everyone here is testing something unfinished.
Found a weakness? Please tell me privately at hello@astrayagame.com instead of using it or showing it. Thank you.
If these rules are broken, I may remove access.
Your feedback
#Now and then the game asks a few short questions, and there is always a way to report a problem. You can also write to me at any time.
When you send feedback, ideas or bug reports, you give me permission to use them to improve Astraya and to talk about its development. There is no payment for this, and the permission does not run out. You still own what you wrote.
Streams, clips and screenshots
#Yes, please. You may stream the playtest, record clips and post screenshots.
- Say it is an early playtest build, so viewers know it is unfinished.
- Keep your invite, link and sign-in codes off screen, and don’t share access with viewers.
- If you find a security problem, tell me privately instead of showing it.
Founding Testers
#People who play in this playtest are Astraya’s Founding Testers.
As a thank-you, Founding Testers may receive a free Steam key, a thank-you in the game’s credits, or both.
That is a “may”, not a promise. There is no date and no price, and there is no guarantee that every tester gets a key or that Astraya reaches Steam.
Playtesting is voluntary and unpaid. You can stop at any time.
How Astraya uses AI
#Astraya is made by one developer. AI is part of how it was made, and part of how it plays. This section says exactly where, and says plainly where I am not yet sure.
Made live, while you play
- VESPER’s words. When you ask for a move, an AI language model writes its name, the short text on its card and the line VESPER says aloud.
- VESPER’s voice. Her spoken lines are made on the spot by a text-to-speech service, in a voice designed for her.
- Her questions. When she is not sure which of your saved moves you meant, the AI may write a short question for you.
- Your words, as text. When you speak, a speech service turns your recording into text.
The pieces of a move are not invented. The AI puts each new move or power together from the game’s own fixed set of pieces (swings, powers and armour that already exist), and the game’s rules check it before you can use it. The AI cannot create new rules, damage numbers, animations or pictures.
Still missing
VESPER’s text is kept short and checked against the game’s rules, but it does not yet pass through a separate content filter. If she ever says something hurtful or wrong, please report it.
Made beforehand, with AI tools
Then chosen, edited and checked by me:
- the trailer, the story cinematics and the moving background of the game’s menu and this website: AI video, partly upscaled with AI, and the trailer’s music;
- the voices of VESPER, the knight, the bosses and the announcer, and the prologue’s narrator: synthetic voices designed from written descriptions, not copies of any real person;
- story paintings, the skies behind the arenas, and some interface art;
- the Astraya logo: drawn by hand, using AI-generated artwork only for its proportions;
- much of the 3D art: the knight, the bosses and several arena props were made with an AI 3D tool, then rigged and fixed by hand.
Not made with AI
- how the fighters move: motion capture and hand-built animation;
- the menu theme, composed in code;
- many of the sound effects: free sound libraries and sound made in code;
- the stone and ground of the arenas: photo scans.
Not yet confirmed
A few pieces have no written record yet of how they were made: VESPER’s 3D model, the sword and shield, some story paintings and some sound effects. Treat them as possibly made with AI until this page says otherwise.
The trailer is a story cinematic, not gameplay.
It shows Astraya’s world and characters in AI video. The game itself is a 3D duel you play in your browser, and it looks different.
The data the playtest collects
#This is everything the playtest collects about you: what, why, where it goes and how long it stays. Some of it begins only when you play, and some only during the playtest. Items marked Planned arrive with a coming build. If a build needs to collect something not listed here, this agreement gets a new version first.
Your email and signup answers
In useYour email address; your answers on the signup form (what you play on and how strong it is, what you can play with, where you heard about Astraya, and the games you play most); that you confirmed your age; the agreement version you accepted; whether you asked for news about future playtests and Steam; and, if you came from a tagged link, the short name of where that link was posted (like reddit-post).
- Why
- To invite you, to pick a fair mix of machines for each batch, and to know which terms you agreed to.
- Goes to
- Cloudflare, Kit, The playtest database (planned), Resend (planned)
- Kept
- Until you unsubscribe or ask me to delete it.
Your access
PlannedYour invite, when you sign in, and a cookie that keeps you signed in to the game. A game session lasts two hours; a personal invite link keeps you signed in for up to 30 days.
- Why
- To let you in, keep others out, and keep access personal.
- Goes to
- Cloudflare, Railway, The playtest database
- Kept
- Cookies expire on their own. Access records: deleted or anonymised 12 months after the playtest ends.
Your network address
In useYour IP address, used to stop abuse and keep limits fair. The game scrambles it (a one-way hash) before storing it, and stores only counts.
- Why
- So one person, or one bot, cannot flood the game or use up everyone’s share.
- Goes to
- Cloudflare, Railway (planned)
- Kept
- The counts expire within days.
Your voice, only between your taps
In useWhen you choose to speak, you tap to start and tap again to stop, for up to 27 seconds. The clip is cleaned up in your browser, then sent to Fish Audio to become text. If the first try heard the wrong language, the same clip may be sent once more. The microphone is optional: the game plays in full without it, and buttons cover forging, readying and recalling.
- Why
- So you can ask VESPER for a move out loud.
- Goes to
- Railway (planned), Fish Audio
- Kept
- The game does not save the recording: it is passed to Fish Audio and dropped. I am still confirming how long Fish Audio keeps it.
The words you ask with
In useThe text of your request (up to 200 characters), with short descriptions of the moves you have saved.
- Why
- To forge your move, or to work out which saved move you meant.
- Goes to
- Railway (planned), OpenRouter, AI model providers, through OpenRouter, TypeSafe (when switched on)
- Kept
- Not kept once your answer comes back (a forge result lasts two minutes), except in the imagination corpus below.
The imagination corpus
When switched onDuring the playtest, each request to VESPER may be kept as one entry: your words as text, what she promised and what she actually gave you, the moves you had saved, your graphics setting, the game build, a rough picture of the moment in the fight (time, health and stamina) and how it turned out. It never holds your voice recording. Each entry is then sorted by how well VESPER delivered what you asked — served, close, loose or missed — and why. That sorting sends the entry’s text to TypeSafe and to an AI model through OpenRouter.
- Why
- To learn where VESPER misunderstands people and what players imagine, so she gets better. It is used only to improve Astraya.
- Goes to
- Railway (planned), The playtest database (planned), TypeSafe, OpenRouter, AI model providers, through OpenRouter
- Kept
- Deleted or anonymised 12 months after the playtest ends.
What VESPER says aloud
In useThe text of VESPER’s spoken lines (hers, not yours) is sent to Fish Audio to be turned into speech, even when your microphone is off. You can switch her voice off in Settings.
- Why
- So she can speak.
- Goes to
- Railway (planned), Fish Audio
- Kept
- Not stored by the game.
How your matches run
In useOnline versus records connection quality: delay, jitter, rollbacks, sync errors and match length.
- Why
- To find lag and broken matches.
- Goes to
- Railway (planned)
- Kept
- Seven days.
Your daily use of VESPER
PlannedDuring the playtest, how much you ask of VESPER each day: forges, her spoken lines, speech turned into text, and Recall.
- Why
- So the daily allowance stays fair, and the costs of the playtest stay in check.
- Goes to
- Railway, The playtest database
- Kept
- Deleted or anonymised 12 months after the playtest ends.
Your device and browser
PlannedYour browser and system, graphics chip, screen size, processor cores and rough memory, graphics setting, frame rate in each match, controller type, whether the microphone was allowed, and connection delay. The game asks before it sends these.
- Why
- To see what runs badly, and where.
- Goes to
- Railway, The playtest database
- Kept
- Deleted or anonymised 12 months after the playtest ends.
Your feedback and problem reports
PlannedYour answers to the game’s short questions, and anything you send with “Report a problem”, which includes your device details and the game’s recent log lines.
- Why
- To fix what is broken and learn what feels wrong.
- Goes to
- Railway, The playtest database
- Kept
- Deleted or anonymised 12 months after the playtest ends.
What stays on your computer
In useYour settings, graphics choices and story progress are kept in your own browser, not on my servers.
- Why
- So the game remembers your choices.
- Goes to
- Nowhere: it stays on your computer.
- Kept
- Until you clear your browser’s data for the game.
The playtest does not collect your precise location, your contacts or any payment details. It never records you outside your taps, and it carries no advertising or ad tracking.
Who helps run it
#These companies help run the website and the game. Each receives only what its job needs, and handles it under its own terms.
Cloudflare
In useRuns this website and guards the game
Delivers every page, checks that a person is filling in the signup form (Turnstile) and forwards email sent to hello@astrayagame.com. It is also planned to check playtest sign-ins. It counts visits to this website without cookies (Cloudflare Web Analytics): which pages are read, not who reads them.
Kit
In useThe waitlist and its emails
Keeps your email address and signup answers, sends the email that confirms your place, and sends playtest news.
Railway
PlannedHosts the game
Runs the game’s web server and match server. Everything you send while you play passes through it: your session, your network address, your requests to VESPER.
The playtest database
PlannedKeeps tester records
Your email, batch and access, the agreement version you accepted, your daily use, feedback and device reports. The company that hosts it is not chosen yet; this page will name it before it is used.
OpenRouter
In useConnects the game to AI models
Receives the text of what you ask VESPER, with short descriptions of your saved moves, and returns her answer. The game asks it to use only model hosts that keep no copy of a request and do not collect it.
AI model providers, through OpenRouter
In useRun the language model behind VESPER
Write VESPER’s answers from the text OpenRouter passes on. Today the game tries a model from DeepSeek first, then OpenAI, then Anthropic, if one is unavailable. Which company hosts a given request can vary.
Fish Audio
In useSpeech to text, and VESPER’s voice
Turns your voice recording into text, and turns VESPER’s lines into speech. I am still confirming how long Fish Audio keeps audio on its side.
TypeSafe
When switched onWorks out what kind of request you made
A small classifier that reads the text of what you said, never your voice. It tells which language you spoke, whether you wanted a new move or a saved one, and which saved move you meant. It writes no text of its own. It also helps sort the imagination corpus.
Resend
PlannedGame emails
Sends your invite, a fresh sign-in link if you ask for one, and messages about your access.
I do not sell your data, and there are no ads. Most of these companies are based outside India, so your data may be handled in other countries.
How long it is kept
#- Playtest data is deleted or anonymised 12 months after the playtest ends.
- Your email stays on the waitlist until you unsubscribe.
- Much of it lasts far less. Your voice recording is not saved by the game at all, a forge result lasts two minutes, and connection stats last seven days.
Anonymised means every link to you is removed, so what is left can no longer be traced back to you.
Your data, your choice
#You can ask for a copy of your data, a correction, or its deletion. Write to hello@astrayagame.com from the address you signed up with, and say which you want. I answer within 30 days. I may ask you to confirm from that address first, so that nobody else can ask for your data.
- To leave the waitlist, use the unsubscribe link at the bottom of any email.
- To leave the playtest, stop playing and ask me to delete your data.
- The microphone is optional: the game plays in full without it, and buttons cover forging, readying and recalling. Without it, none of your voice is sent.
Honest limit
Some playtest records, like entries in the imagination corpus, are not yet linked to a tester. Until they are, I may not be able to find every entry that came from you. I will tell you plainly what I could and could not delete.
Changes to this agreement
#This is version 1, effective 10 October 2026.
When the terms change, the version number goes up, and the game asks you to accept the new version before you play again. Small fixes, like typos, keep the same version.
If you don’t want to accept a new version, you can stop playing and ask me to delete your data.
